After an extended time, Manirathnam could be directing an immediate Tamil film titled Kadal. Karthik’s son Gowtham is debuting as a hero through this film. Samantha, Aravind Swamy, Arjun and others are starring on this film.

Manirathnam might be directing this film in Tamil alone. Earlier Manirathnam had directed films Raavanan and Aayutha Ezhuthu in Hindi and Tamil languages simultaneously but he has planned to direct Kadal in Tamil alone. He has decided to direct this film in Tamil alone for the reason that screenplay speaks in regards to the lives of Tamil fishermen.
The shooting of Kadal has commenced. The shooting of this film is going down in a sea shore village called Manapad. Manapad is a coastal village that's 60 kms from Tuticorin. Rajiv Menon is handling the camera while A R Rahman is composing the music.
